Tesla, leading electric carmaker to enter Indian market with a sedan

Tesla, the leading Electric Carmaker has announced to enter India soon with its Model 3 sedan at a cost around Rs 23 lakhs. Electric Cars are the need of the hour in the much polluted metro cities of our Nation.

Tesla Motors’ CEO Elon Musk on Thursday tweeted that they will be adding few more countries to their pre-order page. The list includes India, Brazil, SA, SK, NZ, Sing & Ireland. Tesla CEO claimed that the car would deliver at least 215 miles or 346 km of range.

Indians don’t have much experience with Electric vehicles (EV’s), so let’s see what these new Tesla’s car can do.

This Tesla’s Model 3 can be pre-ordered from Tesla’s official website by paying a $1,000 (roughly Rs. 66,000). The fee is refundable if the reservation gets cancelled. You can sign up for test driving a Model S – the company’s premium sedan.

The Model 3 car is the most affordable car of Tesla at $35,000 (Rs.23 lakhs approx). It is expected that the company will be delivering the product at the end of 2017.

The main problem would be that the firm has its production units in USA and Netherlands. Hence, we have to import the cars from there. India has massive duties on cars that are imported. Although Government gives subsidies to electric vehicles, it would still be an enormous sum.

We don’t have that infrastructure to support an electric vehicle in India. Long distance travel with these electric cars is not possible because there are no proper charging points available. So the company plans to set up a supercharging network pan India.

India is still not able to supply electricity properly for daily use, so how can we expect the power to charge the car? So with all these pros and cons can Tesla’s model 3 be hit in India? Wait till 2017!
