British public believe Russia is clearly being demonised over Ukraine

As the Ukraine crisis descends into civil unrest and an undiplomatic stand-off between Russia and the West, WORLDbytes headed on to the streets of East London to gauge British attitudes on camera.

The programme entitled The View on the Streets: Ukraine, features a crew of young volunteers asking the public for their opinions on the Ukraine crisis. The public’s response is both critical and remarkably well informed. Savvy members of the public are clear that media coverage has been one-sided and Russia has been wrongly portrayed as the ‘bad guy’. More than a few are disturbed that EU (and US) policymakers supported anti-government protesters overthrowing a democratically elected government supposedly in the name of democracy. No one expressed a desire to blame Putin, Russia or Crimeans for the mess that is engulfing Ukraine.

Director Ceri Dingle said today: “This timely programme provides an important riposte to those who think the public are sheep. The insightful and informed comments of the public should shame most news broadcasters who have been nothing more than Russia-baiting mouthpieces since the Ukraine crisis began. The British public are rightly sceptical of the Westminster hacks who claim to be defending Ukraine against Russia. This moral posturing by Western politicians to prove their superiority over Putin needs to be questioned. It’s turning out to be dangerous too.”
