The Independent Schools Show runs on 8th/9th November in Battersea Park, London SW11.

Since its inception, The Education Theatre has been at the heart of the weekend. Distinguished heads of famous schools, leading educationalists and commentators are invited to respond to issues of mounting concern expressed by thousands of parents with whom the Show is in regular touch.

“Within the independent sector the diversity of choice can be bewildering” says David Wellesley Wesley, The Show’s Director, “As always, the Lecture Programme will address issues affecting every parent looking for every type of private education at every age. But we want to go beyond that and look of the shape of education to come”

Barnaby Lenon, as Chair of the Independent Schools Council, on the Board of OFQUAL and as Chair of the Governors of a London Academy, is peculiarly well placed to look ahead to Academic Reform in the next Parliament and will be doing so on Saturday 8th.

On Sunday 9th, Armistice Day, the Programme will reflect on education in an international context. Dr Katy Ricks, Head of Sevenoaks School a pioneering IB school with a truly international outlook, will look at international mindedness for schools. She will be followed by The Head of Student Recruitment at Oxford and a former Dean of Admissions at Yale debating “US or UK”. This is a real opportunity for parents of children to separate the myth from the reality of entry to higher education on both sides of the Atlantic and to discover something of the wealth of scholarship and financial provision that can be available in the US.

The Show founder, David Wellesley Wesley said “As a Show we want to give parents the opportunity to consider schools that they may not have – ones outside London where there\’s time and space for children to be children”

Thus this year there are two separate, but related slots: \”How boarding beats the teenage blues\” and the case for schools \”beyond the M25\”

24/7 schools, who by definition provide wrap around pastoral care, cannot avoid the mental health issues associated with adolescence and thus to have the Head of one of the country\’s leading and highly academic girls schools, Wycombe Abbey can only be instructive complemented as it will be by the first person story of the author and journalist Rachel Kelly.

It is well known that London schools can be pressure kegs. Indeed, another Speaker, Alison Fleming of Newton Prep, will be putting to parents that they should listen to Heads who, from a position of knowing both the range of schools on offer and the children they are teaching, suggest cramming for admission to London schools may not be the best option.

The Show is also a showcase for parents wishing to find out about Bursary provision within the private sector. All exhibiting schools will answer questions about their own offers and the question will be addressed specifically by Barnaby Lenon in the Education Theatre and will be re-enforced by Richard Harman, Chair of HMC and Headmaster of Uppingham when he talks to the Independent Sector offering Freedom not Privilege and how private schools share their success.
