This summer, children will likely spend hours outside and a good amount of time online. The Internet offers a world of fun for children, such as online games, message boards, YouTube videos and more. However, the Internet can also be a dangerous place for young eyes, even during an innocent online search. Peekzy, a new online safesearch website was developed to give parents peace of mind and children a safe place to explore the Internet.
Peekzy is a safe search engine that is also eco-friendly. All websites online emit carbon (CO2) due the the consumption of electricity, and Peekzy uses carbon offsets to be a completely carbon neutral website. Peekzy is the first kid-friendly safe search website that offers an environmental twist. The company believes children and the environment are the world\’s great resource, and so both must be protected. Peekyz operates based on Google\’s database and search engine. Users on Peekzy will receive the same result as Google, but with any inappropriate links removed. Parents who have used Google before for school reports may have seen the inappropriate content that sometimes appears, and Peekzy takes care to add an extra filter disabling searches related to adult, racist, or drug-related content. Children are free to \”surf\” the internet without parents worrying about a child encountering unsafe content. The filter extends to both web searches and image searches for double protection.
According to the 2010 Pew Internet and American Life Project study, 80% of the children who use the Internet use it once a week. Each time they access a traditional search engine for school or fun, they increase their chances of seeing adult content. \”Even searching an innocuous topic such as \’My Little Pony\’ can pull up graphic images and content,\” says website creator Mike Zelmerlow. \”In developing Peekzy, we\’re making kid-friendly topics truly kid-friendly.\”
