“The Mafia Rats” by E. C. L. Knox
A compelling adventure story with the scope of Tolkien and the whimsical wizardry of Rowling
About the Book:
Claire Knox’s first book is set in the gardens of Buckingham Palace and details the fearful conflict between Straggly the Witch and the malevolent Mafia Rats. The natural world of small animals and exuberant plants is illustrated by the author in ravishing line-drawings. This epic story combines the scope of Tolkein or Pullman with the whimsical wizardry of Rowling, but it has an atmosphere all its own. You may never read an adventure story, equally suitable for adults and children, as compelling as The Mafia Rats.
About the Author:
Claire Knox, originally a musician (mentor Anthony Hopkins), married into the army and lived all over the world. She has lectured at Oxford University on Creative writing and, as well as writing and illustrating this book, she designs cards.
Excerpt from the Book:
“‘I won’t fail you,’ gushed Straggly, clasping the precious signet-ring. ‘I will do exactly as you ask, dear Badger.’
Deep inside her, Straggly’s heart was thumping hard. She was excited. This was just what she had been born to do. This was her adventure – she had never been an ordinary witch festering in the coven, wreaking horror and misery. She was going to be someone – someone who would be remembered throughout time for her bravery and her courage in saving the order of the world, saving it from sliding into debauchery, chaos and utter disaster at the hands of the wicked rats. Oh yes, she would do this all right and not just for the Grand Duke and his little son, she would do this for herself. She turned to tell the Badger but he was lumbering towards the inner wood, his uneven, rolling gait punctuated by little wisps of smoke as he puffed on his battered, meerschaum pipe.”
