THE PALTOQUET MYSTERY SERIES BY PAT HERBERT IS REPUBLISHED
Some readers’ comments on The Bockhampton Road Murders (the first book in the series):
‘Loved it.’
‘This is a terrific read with a great ending.’
‘The storyline was great and the characters were well developed. I would highly recommend this book.’
‘I couldn’t put it down and read it every chance I could get.’
‘Good pajama day book.’
Since the launch of the Reverend Paltoquet mystery series of novels three years ago, the books have built up a small, but devoted, following of readers who have enjoyed the elements of mystery, crime, psychic phenomena and humour that they contain. There are currently seven titles available in both Kindle and paperback editions, and they are:
The Bockhampton Road Murders
Haunted Christmas
The Possession of November Jones
The Witches of Wandsworth
So Long at the Fair
The Man Who Was Death
The Dark Side of the Mirror
The eighth in the series, Sleeping with the Dead, is due to be published later this year.
The books revolve around the friendship of a South London vicar, Reverend Bernard Paltoquet, and a general practitioner, Robbie MacTavish, and the adventures they have together, solving crimes that are a little bit different from the norm. Many of the mysteries date back in time and involve the laying of restless spirits with the solving of the crimes. Another regular character is Mrs Harper (known affectionately as ‘Mrs Aitch’) who is the vicar’s housekeeper and a dispenser of cockney homespun philosophy that generally puts her employer in his place.
The books appeal to readers who enjoy their crime stories laced with humour and a lightness of touch that many modern day thrillers lack. There are no brutal descriptions of gory murders in these books, although the murders themselves are necessarily unpleasant. There is no dwelling on the details of these crimes, which make them more palatable to those who were brought up on Agatha Christie-type stories. Bernard Paltoquet is no Poirot; but he and Robbie, not to mention their mutual friend, psychic medium, Dorothy Plunkett, manage to bring criminals to justice in their own inimitable way.
The author Pat Herbert lives in London, England. She loves reading modern crime novels and has an extensive film library. She was brought up in a cinema as her mother was an usherette, so naturally many of her Paltoquet books lend themselves to the big screen.
