This is the first full-length account of one of its key players, Jack Saul, a working class Irish Catholic rent boy who worked his way into the upper echelons of the aristocracy, and wrote the notorious pornographic memoir The Sins of the Cities of the Plain.
This book explores his colourful but tragic life and reveals for the first time the true story about what really went on behind the velvet curtains of Number 19 Cleveland Street.

About the Author:
Glenn Chandler is best-known as the creator and writer of Taggart, which became the longest running television detective series in the world. He has also written true crime television dramas, notably those on William Palmer the poisoner, George Joseph Smith the ‘Brides in the Bath’ killer, and John George Haigh, the acid bath murderer. His books include Burning Poison, a true account of a Georgian Liverpool murder mystery, and two fictional novels about Brighton detective Steve Madden, Savage Tide and Dead Sight. Glenn is also an award-winning theatre writer, producer and director.
This book has also been turned into a new musical which will be showing at the Above The Stag Theatre in Vauxhall, London from 11th May – 12th June 2016.
Glenn Chandler was interviewed about his book and show on radio, on the Literary London programme on Resonance 104.4 FM at 7pm on Friday 22nd April. The hour was devoted to Glenn, his writing background, and The Sins of Jack Saul book and musical. “On 19 August, the police burst into a house at 2 Howland Street just off the Tottenham Court Road, hoping to find George Daniel Veck. The self-proclaimed Reverend gentleman was not at home, but his ‘secretary’, seventeen-year-old George Barber, was lying in bed. Interrogated, Barber said that his employer was in Portsmouth, where Veck had probably been visiting his family. The police went to Waterloo Station and arrested Veck when he came off the train.
In his possession were various documents including letters from Algernon Allies, asking for money and mentioning a ‘Mr Brown’. This was the youth whom Lord Arthur Somerset had taken under his wing after the burglary at his club (or at the residence of Lord Colville of Culross, whichever one prefers) and put up at 19 Cleveland Street. Allies was much addicted to writing letters asking for money.”
