Waste King, the specialist collections, clearance and recycling company, has won a second Gold Award from the National Recycling Stars Scheme.
More information: Waste King
It won its first Gold Award from the Scheme last year and, in 2011, it won a Silver Award.
The scheme, run by E2B Pulse, the UK carbon reduction network, rewards an organisation’s commitment to increasing the amount of waste it recycles and to improving the environmental awareness of its staff. In particular, it recognises organisations that are making efforts to divert waste from landfill.
Waste King’s managing director, Glenn Currie, commented: “Waste King’s delighted to have maintained its Gold Award status this year. Maintaining this status is by no means automatic.
“Among the many environmentally friendly initiatives that the company has pursued over the past year has been the growth in the use of waste pods,” he continued. “Already there are over 50 of these waste pods in use – allowing us to segregate, and thus recycle more of, our customers’ waste.
“This reduces waste going to landfill to a minimum. In addition, it also saves the customer money as well as improving that customer’s environmentally friendly status.”
According to Alan Harris, Maintenance Manager at Sunrise of Elstree, one of the chain of residential care homes, the home generates – on average – some 30 to 40 metres of waste a year. Alan commented: “If you used a skip for this, it’d be full up after putting four beds in it – and it’d cost you around £200. Whereas the benefit of using Waste King’s waste pod system is that you’re only charged for waste disposal by the metre. That means you only pay for the actual amount of waste – so you don’t pay for the ‘air’, or the unused space, in the loaded skip.
“What’s really helpful is that Waste King takes away all of the home’s waste – even the hazardous waste, the safe disposal of which is now heavily regulated,” he said. “Moreover, we need certificates and other paperwork to show that these things have been disposed of safely and correctly – and Waste King not only fulfils these requirements for us but it also supplies us with all the necessary paperwork.”
Waste King’s recycling and waste collection services include house, garden and garage clearance, wait and load services, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collections and site waste management plans (SWMP). The company also offers confidential document destruction.

About The National Recycling Stars scheme
The National Recycling Stars scheme recognises organisations that are making efforts to divert waste from landfill. Organisations are judged on their recycling achievements according to four key criteria:
• Percentage of Waste Recycled and/or Recovered – the amount of waste that is recycled and/or recovered. There is a minimum percentage that must be achieved to qualify for each star rating.
• Number of Recycling Initiatives – This criteria is in place to prevent Recycling Star winners from ‘standing still’. If a business or organisation is awarded a Gold Award (three stars) in one particular year, but undertakes no initiatives the next, the scheme reserves the right to reduce the number of stars awarded (or remove them all).
• Employee Awareness – An organisation must demonstrate that it has undertaken initiatives to inform staff of the recycling options available to them. There should be an understanding of why it is important to recycle and, for those achieving three stars, there should be a recycling / environmentally friendly culture that is employee-led.
• Other Environmental Initiatives – While responsible waste management is important and can play a large part in reducing an organisation’s impact on the environment, the scheme recognises that there are other actions that organisations can and should take. Star winners should provide evidence of other initiatives that have been undertaken to reduce their environmental impact.
