Nick Hanington, from Norwich, has created a business making bespoke wooden canoes in his Norfolk workshop. Nick, who completed a boatbuilding course in 2014, started Weston Canoes just under a year ago. The high levels of interest encouraged him that he could turn it into a niche business.
The canoes are beautifully handmade from marine plywood, using the African wood okoume. The beautiful boats have proved a hit across the country and outside East Anglia, the business has already picked up customers in London, Portsmouth and Wales.
Weston Canoes has received support from the Prince’s Trust who offer loans for young entrepreneurs to help them start new businesses.
But business hasn’t been quite as straightforward as planned. The elegant design of his canoes seems to be generating as much interest in using them indoors as outdoors. . Weston Canoes have already been asked to create a canoe-table and split one in half to hang on the wall as a piece of art.
Most recently Weston Canoes recieved a request from an interior designer in Manchester who has commissioned 4 bespoke canoes to hang from the ceiling of a new restaurant.
